How to Switch from Okendo to BetterReviews

Thinking about switching from Okendo? What the migration looks like — review export, what you keep, what changes, and how to minimize disruption.

The cost math

Okendo’s real features start at $119/mo (Growth) and $299/mo (Power). BetterReviews includes AI on every plan at $19/mo flat.

ScenarioOkendo costBetterReviews costAnnual savings
Growth plan ($119/mo)$119/mo$19/mo$1,200/year
Power plan ($299/mo)$299/mo$19/mo$3,360/year

At Power plan savings, you could run BetterReviews for over 15 years for less than 1 year of Okendo Power.

Plus: BetterReviews is month-to-month. No annual commitments. Export and switch anytime.

Common fears addressed

”I rely on attribute reviews”

This is the honest one. If structured product attributes — “True to Size,” “Skin Type,” “Durability” — are genuinely essential to how your customers shop, Okendo may still be the right choice. No other app does attribute-based reviews as well.

But consider: are attributes driving purchase decisions on your store, or are they nice-to-have data you rarely look at? For fashion and beauty brands where shoppers filter by body type or skin tone, attributes matter. For most other categories, AI conversations often draw out the same information naturally — customers mention fit, quality, and use cases when asked the right follow-up questions.

”I use Okendo Groups to share reviews across variants”

BetterReviews has the same feature — Review Groups — on the Pro and Enterprise plans. You manually pick which products belong together, and the storefront widget shows a combined star rating and review count on every grouped product page. Shopify Collections auto-sync is on the v0.6 roadmap; for v0 you select products by hand. See Review Groups → for the full guide.

”Will I lose my reviews?”

No. Okendo supports CSV export (Settings > Import/Export > Export). BetterReviews imports reviews with original dates, star ratings, text, and product associations preserved.

”What about Q&A data?”

BetterReviews supports Q&A import. Export your Q&A from Okendo (Settings → Import/Export → Export Q&A) and import it via the Import Q&A tab in BetterReviews Settings → Import & Export. Questions and answers are preserved with original dates, product associations, and answerer attribution. See Importing Q&A →.

”What about Klaviyo integration?”

Okendo locks Klaviyo behind the $299/mo Power plan. BetterReviews integrates at all tiers. If you’ve been paying $299/mo partly for Klaviyo access, this alone changes the math. For details: Okendo Pricing Breakdown.

”What about Google rich snippets?”

The BetterReviews Reviews Widget outputs a complete Product JSON-LD — star rating plus live price and availability — so you keep (and often improve on) your rich results. Google re-indexes within 2-4 weeks; temporary fluctuation during any switch is normal.

One important cleanup step: Okendo’s structured data is added by a snippet pasted into your theme (it reads Okendo’s metafields), and uninstalling the Okendo app does not remove it. Left in place, it keeps publishing stale ratings frozen at the day you uninstalled, and Google sees two competing Product blocks (Okendo’s + ours) — which can suppress your rich result. To fix it, do one of the following:

  • Recommended: remove the Okendo JSON-LD snippet from your theme (and turn off your theme’s built-in product schema if it has one), and let the BetterReviews widget be the single source of product structured data.
  • Or: if you’d rather your theme keep owning structured data, turn the widget’s “Output product structured data (JSON-LD)” setting off (Shopify theme editor → the Reviews Widget block) so BetterReviews doesn’t add a second Product block.

Either way, the goal is exactly one Product block on the page. Need a hand? We’ll do this cleanup for you — just ask.

”Month-to-month?”

Yes. No contracts. No annual commitments. Export your reviews and switch again if BetterReviews isn’t the right fit. No lock-in.

What you keep vs what you lose

Keep:

  • All review text, star ratings, and dates
  • Photo URLs (if included in export)
  • Product associations
  • Your review count and average ratings
  • Send volume. Based on what we’ve observed across merchants we’ve migrated, Okendo has historically treated review-request emails as transactional — sending to customers in the delivery window without gating on Shopify’s marketing-consent checkbox. BetterReviews uses the same default treatment (transactional post-purchase emails, no promo content). If Okendo was reaching your customers, BetterReviews will reach the same population. (Strict explicit-opt-in mode is available via Require marketing consent in Collect → Marketing-consent gate — see Marketing consent.)

Temporarily changes:

  • Rich snippets (2-4 week Google re-indexing period; remove Okendo’s leftover theme JSON-LD snippet so Google doesn’t see two Product blocks — see the rich-snippets FAQ above)
  • Widget appearance (different design, customizable in theme editor)

Lose:

  • Attribute tags and structured attribute data (Okendo-specific format)
  • Loyalty program data (separate migration if using Okendo Loyalty)
  • Quizzes, referrals, surveys data (separate Okendo products)
  • Bazaarvoice retail syndication

Honest note: If attribute reviews are mission-critical to your customer experience — if shoppers actively filter by size, skin type, or body type and this measurably affects your conversion rate — Okendo may still be the right choice despite the cost difference. The savings don’t matter if the product doesn’t serve your customers.

Before you switch: checklist

  • Evaluate attribute dependency. Do customers actually use attribute filters? Check your analytics. If attribute usage is low, the migration cost is minimal.
  • Export your reviews. Settings > Import/Export > Export in Okendo’s dashboard. Save the CSV.
  • Document your widget setup. Screenshot product page widget placement, attribute display settings, and any custom CSS.
  • Check your plan’s order limit. If you’re approaching your tier limit anyway, timing a switch before an upgrade makes financial sense.
  • Plan Loyalty/Quizzes migration separately. If you use Okendo’s other products, migrate them independently.

The migration process

1. Export from Okendo, connect through onboarding

Go to Settings > Import/Export > Export in your Okendo dashboard. This captures review text, ratings, dates, customer info, and product associations. Then install BetterReviews — onboarding step 1 (/onboarding/connect) accepts the Okendo CSV directly.

2. Review your library audit

After import, BetterReviews surfaces what’s been latent in your imported library — how many reviews are detailed enough to feature, how many are ad-ready right now, and which support cases could route away. The audit shows you concrete numbers from your own data within a few minutes.

3. Pick a test product

Onboarding step 3 (/onboarding/test-product) lets our team swap your widget on a single product and validate end-to-end before you commit to a full cutover. About one business day.

4. Keep new collection off until cutover

Don’t enable BetterReviews collection while Okendo is still collecting. The merchant evaluation pattern is to run a single product on BetterReviews first, validate, and only then flip collection at the /cutover surface. This avoids dual-sending review requests and keeps your customer experience consistent.

When you’re ready, the cutover surface flips collection_enabled and digest_enabled atomically. Before that, BetterReviews stays in observe-only mode on the imported library.

5. Remove Okendo

Uninstall the Okendo Reviews app. If you’re keeping other Okendo products (Loyalty, Quizzes, Referrals), only remove Reviews. Verify no leftover code in your theme.

Note: The BetterReviews team handles the import and assists with widget setup.

Auto-moderation and your imported reviews

Imported reviews keep the status they had in Okendo (approved stays approved; pending stays pending). They are not put through BetterReviews’ auto-moderation preset — even if you later switch from Manual to a non-manual preset, the retroactive re-scoring only touches reviews collected through BetterReviews’ AI chat or public form. Imported pending reviews stay in your queue until you approve or reject them by hand.
