How to Switch from Yotpo to BetterReviews
A practical guide to migrating from Yotpo. Covers review export, Google rich snippet recovery, contract timing, and what changes for your customers.
The cost math
The most common reason stores switch from Yotpo is pricing that escalates with order volume.
| Scenario | Yotpo cost | BetterReviews cost | Annual savings |
|---|---|---|---|
| 500 orders/mo, Pro plan | $169/mo | $19/mo | $1,800/year |
| 1,000 orders/mo, Pro plan | $269/mo | $19/mo | $3,000/year |
| 5,000 orders/mo, Pro plan | $379/mo | $19/mo | $4,320/year |
Plus: BetterReviews is month-to-month. No annual contracts. No non-refundable commitments.
At the highest savings tier, you could run BetterReviews for over 19 years for less than one year of Yotpo Pro at 5,000 orders.
Common fears addressed
”Will I lose my reviews?”
No. Yotpo lets you export all reviews to CSV (Settings > Export Reviews to CSV). BetterReviews imports them with original dates, star ratings, review text, and product associations preserved. Your review count and average ratings carry over.
”Will my conversion rate drop?”
Minimal, if at all. The transition period is where the risk lives — not the destination. Run both apps side-by-side for 1-2 weeks if you’re concerned. Your imported reviews display immediately on BetterReviews’ widget. New AI conversations start collecting richer content from day one.
”What about Google rich snippets?”
The BetterReviews Reviews Widget outputs a complete Product JSON-LD — star rating plus live price and availability. Google will re-index your product pages within 2-4 weeks; temporary fluctuation in rich snippet display during that window is normal for any switch, not permanent loss. If you use review groups (Pro/Enterprise) to share reviews across variants, the on-page widget aggregates the group; JSON-LD AggregateRating stays per-product per Google’s product-schema policy.
If Yotpo (or your theme) was injecting its own product structured data, remove it so Google sees only one Product block — two competing blocks can suppress your rich result. Either let the BetterReviews widget be the single source, or turn its “Output product structured data (JSON-LD)” setting off (Shopify theme editor → Reviews Widget block) and keep the theme’s.
”What about my Yotpo Loyalty, SMS, or Email?”
Yotpo’s Loyalty, SMS & Email, and Subscriptions are separate products. BetterReviews replaces the Reviews product only. If you use Yotpo’s other products, plan each migration independently:
- Loyalty: Smile.io, LoyaltyLion, or keep Yotpo Loyalty standalone
- SMS/Email: Klaviyo, Omnisend, or keep Yotpo’s SMS/Email product
- Subscriptions: Recharge, Appstle, or keep Yotpo Subscriptions
You can switch reviews while keeping the rest.
”What if BetterReviews doesn’t work out?”
Month-to-month billing. No contracts. Export your reviews (including ones collected through AI conversations) and switch again anytime. No lock-in, no non-refundable annual fees.
”Is the hassle worth it?”
$1,800-$4,320/year in savings, depending on your order volume. Most of the hassle is making the decision — the actual migration is a few steps over a couple of days. The BetterReviews team handles the import.
What you keep vs what you lose
Keep:
- All review text, star ratings, and dates
- Photo and video URLs (if included in export)
- Product associations
- Your review count and average ratings
Temporarily changes:
- Rich snippets (2-4 week Google re-indexing period)
- Widget appearance (BetterReviews’ widget looks different — customize in theme editor)
Lose:
- Yotpo Loyalty data (separate migration needed)
- Yotpo SMS/Email subscribers (separate migration needed)
- In-mail review submission capability (BetterReviews uses AI conversations instead)
- Yotpo’s specific integrations (check BetterReviews’ integration list)
Before you switch: checklist
- Check your contract renewal date. Yotpo annual contracts are non-refundable. Time your switch to align with renewal.
- Export your reviews. Settings > Export Reviews to CSV in Yotpo’s dashboard. Download and save the file.
- Document your current widget setup. Screenshot your product page widget placement and any custom CSS.
- Note your Yotpo integrations. Which other apps connect to Yotpo? Verify BetterReviews supports them or identify alternatives.
- Plan Loyalty/SMS migration separately. If you use Yotpo’s other products, don’t try to migrate everything at once.
The migration process
1. Export from Yotpo, connect through onboarding
Go to Settings > Export Reviews to CSV in your Yotpo dashboard. This captures review text, ratings, dates, customer info, and product associations. Then install BetterReviews — onboarding step 1 (/onboarding/connect) accepts the Yotpo CSV directly via the “Yotpo, Loox, or other” card.
2. Review your library audit
After import, BetterReviews surfaces what’s been latent in your imported library — how many reviews are detailed enough to feature, how many are ad-ready right now, and which support cases could route away. Concrete numbers from your own data within a few minutes.
3. Pick a test product
Onboarding step 3 (/onboarding/test-product) lets our team swap your widget on a single product and validate end-to-end before you commit to a full cutover. About one business day.
4. Keep new collection off until cutover
Don’t enable BetterReviews collection while Yotpo is still collecting. The merchant evaluation pattern is to run a single product on BetterReviews first, validate, and only then flip collection at the /cutover surface. This avoids dual-sending review requests and keeps your customer experience consistent.
When you’re ready, the cutover surface flips collection_enabled and digest_enabled atomically. Before that, BetterReviews stays in observe-only mode on the imported library.
5. Remove Yotpo
Uninstall the Yotpo Reviews app from your Shopify admin. Verify no leftover code in your theme files. If you’re keeping Yotpo’s other products (Loyalty, SMS), only remove the Reviews app.
Note: The BetterReviews team handles the import and can assist with widget setup. The migration is a handoff, not a DIY project.
Auto-moderation and your imported reviews
Imported reviews keep the status they had in Yotpo. They are not put through BetterReviews’ auto-moderation preset — even if you later switch from Manual to a non-manual preset, the retroactive re-scoring only touches reviews collected through BetterReviews’ AI chat or public form. Imported pending reviews stay in your queue until you approve or reject them by hand.
